Inspiration comes from a lot of things and can come from anything. The inspiration to travel can come from friends, family, tv shows, documentaries, books, social media, the internet, newspapers, magazines, and the one I’m going to look at for this post, films. There are films I’ve watched over the years and they’ve either made me want to go travelling, or made me really jealous and want to visit a certain place. Here are my top 5 films that have inspired me to travel over the years:
- The Beach
A pretty obvious one, and I’m sure it’s on many peoples lists. It’s one of my favourite films, and having got the chance to visit Thailand in 2016, I soon began to love the film even more, as it featured one of my favourite countries that I’ve been to. Thailand didn’t disappoint. If you love Thailand, you’ll love this film, and vice versa. The Moby Porcelain song puts a little smile on my face every time I hear it! Although you don’t want some of the things that happen in the film, to happen to you on your travels, the best part of the film is definitely that this paradise island he’s searching for and finds, really does exist! Be warned, when you get home, it becomes the most depressing film! It just makes you really jealous that you’re at home again, rather than back there! The book is also great if you haven’t read it.

Although the film isn’t one of my favourites, it does inspire me every time I watch it. If you’re wanting a second chance at life, this is the film to inspire you. If you’re a single woman wanting to get on the road, but worried you can’t do it, this film will inspire you. After having doubts about going to Thailand on my own last year, I was told to watch this. By the end of it, I had no doubts whatsoever. And it made me take one of the best trips of my life.

- Into the Wild
“If you want something in life, reach out and grab it.” The motto of this film, and will be one of yours after watching it. Very similar to Wild, but from a male perspective, and with a sadder ending. If friends and family don’t understand why you’re going travelling, instead of building your career etc, then this is the film to make you realise you’re doing the right thing and to ignore them! Based on a true story, and although the ending isn’t what you’re hoping for, there is a sense of achievement.

- Eat, Pray, Love
If you’re feeling lost, or not happy with your life, then this is a film you can relate to. A woman on a quest to travel the world, to reconnect and rediscover her inner self. A film that shows you that you’re never too old to go out of your comfort zone.

There is no wonder this film was nominated for Best Film at the Venice Film Festival. Based on a true story, 27 year old Aussie, Robyn, decided to go on a 9 month journey across the Australian Outback, with just four camels and a dog. With financial help from a photographer from the National Geographic Magazine. Not only will it inspire you to travel, it will also leave you amazed by how she did it. Everyone thought it was impossible, and she made it an adventure.
